VAN HELSING STORY
Van Helsing is an assassin, hired by a secret organization, to rid the earth of unholy monsters. He keeps the world safe from destruction, in a hopeless attempt to keep the monsters of the world under wraps and out of the limelight. The only problem with this is that he is the most wanted man in Europe because of the destruction that he has caused; some calling him a murderer and some calling him a hero. Although this is a big burden, it doesn’t really bother him, because he tries to keep a low profile, but his work is not perfect. What his superiors dislike is his style of fighting the monsters; he’s always into killing them instead of bringing them in alive, which is something that really pisses off his superiors.
Things change from the everyday boring assignment when he is asked to go to Transylvania, to kill Count Dracula. Dracula, his three wives, and his assistants are all living in a castle somewhere in Transylvania, elusive to the villagers residing in the town. There is also another part of the assignment; Van Helsing’s real reason for going to kill Dracula is that there is a family of Transylvanians that has bowed to kill Dracula before they are allowed into Heaven. The family members who keep taking on Dracula are dying so rapidly in fact, that there are only two of them remaining. Anna and her brother are in the fight until death, and Anna decides that she will help Van Helsing until the end. A wrench is thrown into Van Helsing’s plans, when he learns Dracula is trying to bring his children to life using immense body energy, like that found in Frankenstein’s monster. Somehow, Dracula must be stopped, and it must be made sure of that his offspring never come to life. If this was to happen, not only Transylvania could be in trouble.
This was a movie that I had medium expectations for, but I never expected it to really be a great movie. What I expected from this movie was just a fun, unrealistic, summer blockbuster that I could sit down and enjoy. That is exactly what I got from this film, as right from the start, it grabs you and never lets you go. This movie is one action-packed ride, filled with witty dialogue and some overacting, which both seemed meant to be. This is not a movie that most critics would love, that’s for sure. It’s far from being a great, amazing, intelligent movie. In fact, this movie hardly has any character development or story development in it, except for a few short scenes. This movie was made solely for action, and that’s what it delivers, actually adding a few jumpy scenes, as well as quite a bit of suspense.
The previews showed this movie as a computer animator’s dream; chocked full of CGI effects, costing millions of dollars. Well, that’s pretty much what it is, but it didn’t detract from the movie-going experience too much. I share the same opinion as most people, which is that the monsters were portrayed more effectively when they were portrayed by real people, but this is a new age. CGI Computer animation is movies is in full force, and although I’m not a big fan of it, I’m not going to complain of the over-use in this movie, because it was just meant to be fun. It wasn’t meant to be anything amazing, it was just meant to allow people to enjoy themselves for a couple of hours. This movie is a good homage to the old monster movies of the thirties and forties, just with things done a lot differently. Give this movie a chance, it’s really not as bad as people are saying it is, as long as you know what you’re in for; fun. 7 out of 10.
